The Shrine of the Beheading of John the Baptist is located in the Latin Monastery in Madaba, a hill where an old stronghold once stood. The fortification was built by ancient civilizations like Moabite, Roman, and Byzantine. In 1880, Christian tribes arrived in Madaba, constructing houses and a church named the Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist, due to its proximity to the place where John the Baptist was beheaded in Makawar Castle.

The Madaba Archaeological Museum is situated in Madaba city, close to the Church of John, and is one of the attractions of the city despite more reputed sites, as most of its interiors are decorated with mosaics from the Byzantine period between the fifth and the eighth century.
