On this exciting day of your Cairo day trip, after enjoying breakfast, you will be accompanied by a knowledgeable tour guide to the renowned Egyptian Museum. Home to the world’s largest and most significant collection of Egyptian artifacts, the museum’s standout treasures include the stunning relics of the golden boy-king, Tutankhamun, whose tomb was famously uncovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings. The museum is filled with countless artifacts, royal mummies, and fascinating possessions from ancient times.
Next, you’ll be taken to the historic Citadel of Saladin, built in the 12th century to fortify Cairo as Egypt’s capital. Here, you’ll step inside the magnificent alabaster mosque, constructed by Mohamed Ali in 1805, and enjoy breathtaking views of the city below, filled with centuries-old mosques, minarets, and domes, some dating back over a millennium.
The tour continues to Coptic Cairo, where you’ll visit the ancient Roman fortress of Babylon, built in the 1st century, and explore the extraordinary Hanging Church, which appears to float above the fortress’s towers. You’ll also see the Church of St. Sergius, often called the Cavern Church, constructed above the crypt where it is believed that Jesus and the Virgin Mary took refuge for three months. The well that supplied them with water still stands today. Your visit to Coptic Cairo will also include the historic Ben Ezra Synagogue, thought to be the site where the Pharaoh’s daughter discovered baby Moses floating in the Nile.
Afterward, your guide will lead you on a journey through the historic district of Islamic Cairo. You’ll be captivated by the ancient city walls, gates, and alleyways dating back to the Fatimid dynasty in the 10th century A.D.
Finally, stroll through the lively Khan El Khalili Bazaar, where you can unwind with a cup of mint tea at the famous Al-Fishawy cafe and enjoy a wonderful shopping experience, perfect for picking up souvenirs and gifts.
