Aromatherapy in Ancient Egypt

Aromatherapy may be described to as a comprehensive therapeutic therapy since it strives to enhance people's health and well-being. Another name for it is aromatherapy. The use of essential oils, which Healthline states are the fundamental components of aromatherapy techniques, is another facet of aromatherapy. The main goal of aromatherapy is to restore equilibrium to the body, mind, and—above all—spirit. Aromatherapy is regarded as both an art and a science that is becoming increasingly widely utilized and respected in the fields of health and research.

Aromatic plant essentials were added to balms and oils in all ancient civilizations such as China, India, and Egypt. Such compounds were organic and cosmetic in nature and had a therapeutic and spiritual purpose as well; they had both somatic and psychic effects.

Adverse effects: Most essential oils can be used safely, however, as well as side effects, there are some precautions that should be observed, especially in the case when one is on certain prescription medications.

Essential oils should never be used undiluted on the skin, they must always be diluted with a carrier oil. Essential oils, especially citrus essential oils should be used with caution and always skin tested first before use as they tend to increase photosensitivity of the skin, therefore they should not be used in conjunction with sun exposure.

Side effects of using essential oils include the following:

  • skin rashes
  • asthma attacks
  • headaches
  • Allergic reactions
  • skin irritation
  • nausea
