The tourist city of Sharm El-Sheikh in South Sinai Governorate includes one of the most important airports in the world. The airport was named after the city after Egypt received it from Israel in 1982. It was called Afira International Airport, and it was chosen in a location approximately 20 kilometers away from Sharm El-Sheikh City Council.
The airport has been developed more than once since it was received, and its capacity increased to about 7 million passengers in 2020, after the capacity was 4 million in 2010, and now another development process is underway to increase the capacity to reach 10 million passengers annually, before the climate summit next November.
Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport will become the first green airport in Egypt, as there are two studies to install solar power stations at the airport, one in the arrivals hall with a capacity of 300 kilowatts, and the other to install a unit with a capacity of 5 megawatts, in order to cover the airport’s consumption throughout the year, adding that the city’s visual identity has been installed throughout the airport.
