Consequently, it became imperative to set up an international airport for the purpose of accommodating tourists, and it came into being in 1977. The airport serves Hurghada city and adjoining settlements such as El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi, Safaga, Ras Ghareb and Quseir.

The new Terminal 2 includes two arrival and departure halls, 11 departure gates connected to aircraft by direct bridges, in addition to 9 departure gates to serve distant aircraft by buses, as the new building accounts for 45% of the total operating flights at the airport.

The building includes 72 reservation counters for checking in and receiving bags, in addition to 2 counters for the service of large-sized baggage. The baggage sorting area for departures has been developed and operates an automated transportation system that includes 6 conveyors to transport the bags of departing passengers, and 9 electric conveyors to receive the bags of arriving passengers. The airport provides regular transportation services to Cairo, and offers direct flights to many European destinations, and offers more than 40 different airlines.
