Facts about Trajan The Roman Emperor

  • 05 16, 2023

The greatest of the Roman emperors was Emperor Trajan, the second of the Five Good Emperors, who ruled from 96 to 117 AD. One of the Roman Emperors, Marcus Pius Nerva Traianus (53–117 AD), ruled over the enormous Roman Empire between 98 and 117 AD. At the height of the Roman Empire, he is credited for its expansion.

How did trajan become emperor

His son by adoption Trajan succeeded him in ruling. Trajan, the first Roman emperor, was born at Italica, which is close to Seville today. A gifted soldier and a capable governor, he came to Rome as an ordinary person and earned the people’s affection. Following the footsteps of Augustus, Vespasian, and Nerva, he returned the Senate to active governance and established a system of state paternalism, which made provision for the nutrition and care of the neglected offspring.

He had a particular vision for the empire, maximizing its reach during his reign, while maintaining close control over state finances. Taxes, without any increase, were sufficient under his reign to pay for the budgeted expenditures. The informers Domitian used to support his tyranny were expelled from Rome. To protect the port of Alexandria, Trajan reopens the canal between the Red Sea and the Nile.

When was Trajan born

Trajan came into this world on the 18th of September 53 in Italica and proceeded to serve as an officer in the Roman army. Trajan's father was a governor of a province called Syria. Taking Apollodorus of Damascus along with him, he went to Rome when he became a consul in 77.

Apollodorus was an architect who was in charge of the construction of most of the well-known structures in Rome and along the Rhine, and as a man who had gone through wars, he was the one chosen to succeed the unfit for the military query Emperor Domitian Nerva. Since Nerva needed to have the military on his side, he adopted Trajan as his son and heir in the summer of 97, thus achieving this aim. As soon as Nerva, who was the last emperor prior to Domitian's successor Trajan, passed away on January 27, 98, there were no issues and everyone showed great respect for the newly appointed emperor.

In 116, Trajan himself led his forces from Rome and Syria east and south into Mesopotamia and captured the capital city of Stesiphon on the Tigris River. According to historian Edward Gibbon, Trajan "enjoyed the honor of being the first Roman general, and also the last, to sail that remote sea" after arriving in the Persian Gulf. He was an ambitious man who hoped to sail from there to the far-off coasts of Asia and India.

Trajan accomplishments

In the year 98, Emperor Trajan came to power after Domitianus, and at the beginning of his reign he was very busy with the affairs of Europe, yet two serious projects were carried out in Egypt during his reign:

The first was the renovation of the Ptolemaic Bay that connects the Nile to the Red Sea, which had been neglected and its sides had collapsed, so Trajan restored it and greatly increased its length until it reached Babylon after passing through the city of Ain Shams, and there is no doubt that it is the current bay itself, and it was restored again and slightly increased in length (due to the transformation of its course) in the Islamic era.

The second project was the construction of the great Babylonian citadel, the remains of which are now known as the Palace of Wax, which for this era includes six of the oldest Christian churches in Cairo, but when this citadel was built, there was only one church within its walls, which is now known as Abu Sarja, and the reader should know that Trajan's citadel is different from the old citadel mentioned by the historian Strabo and was located south of the Palace of Wax near the current Babylon Monastery.
