The Red Pyramid

The Red Pyramid

The Pyramid of Snefru, located in Dahshur, is recognized as one of the lesser-known archaeological sites in Cairo. Its common designation, the Red Pyramid, derives from the reddish sedimentary rock predominantly used in its construction. Additionally, the Bent Pyramid is often referred to as the Shining or Northern Pyramid. In an effort to rectify previous architectural errors, the foundation of this pyramid was constructed using multiple layers of fine white sedimentary rock, effectively addressing structural challenges encountered in earlier pyramids. Tura limestone served as the casing stone, providing a smooth exterior finish.

The Red Pyramid of King Snefru

Alternatively, for those on a tighter budget seeking to optimize their time and expenses, a variety of affordable tour packages are available. Of significant importance is the fact that some of the casing stones have been dated. This not only provides insights into the duration of the pyramid's construction but also reveals the sequence of labor involved. Historical evidence suggests that the construction of the pyramid likely commenced during the 22nd to 29th years of Snefru's reign, who was the father of King Cheops and the spouse of the esteemed Queen Hetepheres. Additional dating indicates that two years later, six layers of stone had been laid. Remarkably, within four years, thirty percent of the pyramid was completed, culminating in the entire structure being finished in a span of seventeen years.

It is important to highlight that the engineers responsible for the construction of the Red Pyramid drew valuable lessons from the errors encountered during the building of the Bent Pyramid in Dahshur. Their efforts culminated in the successful creation of the first true pyramid in ancient Egypt, which is accompanied by a temple and several tombs in its vicinity.

To the east of the pyramid lies the ceremonial temple, which, like many Egyptian pyramids, features a singular entrance located on the side. This entrance leads to a passageway measuring 206 feet in length, which descends at an angle of twenty-seven degrees to the main chamber. The primary chamber boasts a stepped ceiling that reaches approximately forty feet in height. All three chambers within this pyramid exhibit sloping ceilings, comprising between eleven and fourteen layers. Despite the substantial weight of nearly two million tons of stone above, the design of the roof remains remarkably sturdy, showing no signs of cracks or structural deficiencies to date.

In Egypt, there exists a site known as the Dahshur Archaeological Site, which is home to the Pyramid of Amenemhet III. A visit to this location offers a wealth of fascinating insights about its historical significance.
