Besides the building there is much more inside the Citadel and out of them all the most famous is the mosque of Mohamed Ali which is made of white alabaster in the style of the Ottoman mosques built in Istanbul, its layout is square, and measures forty-one meters on each side. In the center, the dome has a diameter of 21 meters and its height is 52 meters. The Citadel has seen further growth during the next 700 years since it was built by the legendary Sultan Saladin and most of it during the period of the Mamluk Sultanate. It was declared by UNESCO as the world heritage site in 1976 and is opened to the public from the year 1983.
