King Hussein bin Talal's wife, Queen Alia bint Al Hussein, is the mother of King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein and the reason behind the name of Queen Alia International Airport. The airport was named in Queen Alia's honor in 1977 after she passed away tragically in an aircraft tragedy, recognizing her significant contribution to the development of Jordan and its people.
Airport International Group, the Jordanian firm in charge of the renovation, expansion, and management of Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), announced that the airport has made a giant leap in its position among 267 airports worldwide, having been ranked number one in ‘Best Airport’ and ‘Best Improvement’ in the Middle East in the year 2014 Airport Service Quality Survey, one of the largest surveys which assesses passenger’s contentment levels with the airports.
The passenger terminal at Queen Alia International Airport consists of two twin buildings, each containing a departure hall, another for arrivals, and a hall for transit passengers, where passengers gather to enter the gates leading to the aircraft, in addition to offices, service halls, and support services. Each building consists of three floors with an area of (62) thousand square meters, connected by an overhead bridge extending between the two middle floors, where the duty-free area is located.
Each building overlooks an independent aircraft parking lot, and each building has five gates for passengers to pass from the plane to the building directly via bridges and vice versa, in addition to a gate for each building to transport passengers by bus to and from the aircraft parking lots, which can accommodate 25 aircraft at the same time. The building includes lounges available for businessmen and VIPs, as well as for first-class passengers and frequent travelers. Its area is approximately 18,000 square meters, accommodating 340 passengers. There are six parking lots near the building that can hold 1,392 cars. The structure can accommodate over 4.5 million passengers a year.
