El-Alamein is situated in the Matrouh governorate, east of Marsa Matrouh and west of Alexandria. The Battle of El-Alamein, one of the most notable battles of the Second World War between the Allied and Axis powers, took place in this area, where the German Afrika Korps were defeated.
