In line with the global trend of airports to rely on new and renewable energies, and the use of clean energy, especially solar energy, and in line with Egypt's Vision 2030 to achieve sustainable development, the state is beginning procedures to transform Sharm El-Sheikh Airport into a green airport operating with solar energy units.

Sharm El Sheikh International Airport is an international airport located 23 km from Sharm El Sheikh. It was previously known as Al-Afira International Airport. One among the major tourist airports is it. The Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority (currently the Ministry of Civil Aviation) took over it after the recovery of the rest of the occupied territories of Sinai in April 1982 to manage it civilly. It had a simple, pre-equipped building divided into a departure hall and another for arrivals, each of which accommodates 150 passengers per hour, and a tarmac that can accommodate 4 medium-sized aircraft.

The capacity of the first passenger terminal is approximately 1,800 passengers/hour, with an area of 10,330 m2. The airport is divided into four halls, two departure halls, an international departure hall with an area of approximately 3,400 m2, a domestic departure hall with an area of 3,900 m2, and two arrival halls, a hall for international arrivals with an area of 3,900 m2, and a hall for domestic arrivals with an area of approximately 1,000 m2. The building also includes passport counters, and an automatic passport and visa reader equipped with an OCR 20 system.

Encompassing 2,500 passengers each hour, the new passenger terminal spans approximately 44,000 square meters. The building has the most advanced technology available and is electronically connected to the airport's initial building.the latest systems for securing passengers' bags through two devices to scan bags electronically and isolate any suspicious bag. The building is designed in the shape of a boat with two wings, one of which is designated for the arrival halls and the other for the travel halls.

Cafeterias, restaurants, VIP lounges with operations room for management are located in the physical center of the structure. Roofed by a large flexible, strong and heat-resistant fabric tent with 7 layers, the new structure stands. Its expected life span is at least 30 years, and it gives an aesthetic appearance to the passenger terminal in Sharm El Sheikh and the nature of the place.
