Details about Dolphin House Marsa Allam

Wadi El Gemal Nature Reserve in Marsa Alam is taking several measures to preserve the lives of Red Sea dolphins, which are a national treasure and a source of attraction and tourist income for diving and snorkeling, and to generate financial income for the state by collecting visit fees.

The dolphin house in the Satayeh Reef area in Marsa Alam, south of the Red Sea, is one of the most important areas for dolphins to be found, as these dolphins are seen at rates ranging between 91 and 100% of the days of the year, with an average presence rate of 93%, and the presence of this group in the Satayeh area is daily during the summer.

The Satayeh Reefs are considered the primary locations for the spiny dolphins’ resting habits during the day or at social interactions, as hunting and feeding activity takes place at night. The numbers of this group range between “24 and 112 dolphins” with a daily average of about “58 dolphins”, while pregnant female dolphins are present between November and June, with the highest numbers in June, and the birth of young dolphins occurs in July and August of each year.

An environmental plan was developed to preserve the dolphin population inhabiting the area, stop the wrong behavior of users of the area, and reduce the numbers in the dolphin resting areas. Based on this information and study, the Environmental Affairs Agency prepared a zoning plan that included dividing the use areas into four main areas, including: Area A 1, 2, which are two shallow areas in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the main coral reef of the Satayeh area, which surveys have shown that their depths do not exceed four meters, and that the dolphin population inhabits Area A for up to 62% of the time, and Area A2 is inhabited for up to 26% of the time, meaning that they represent the resting and relaxation areas for the group of spindle dolphins inhabiting the Satayeh area.
