Based on the agreed pick-up time with your tour operator, our accredited tour guide will meet you anywhere in Cairo and accompany you in a private air-conditioned vehicle for your budget overnight tour to Alexandria. The drive, which takes about 2.5 hours, includes a stop to stretch your legs. Along the way, your guide will provide a historical background of the region.

Upon arrival in Alexandria, your excursions will begin with a visit to Pompey's Pillar, a remarkable architectural feat located amidst the ruins of the Alexandrian Serapeum. This Serapeum was a grand temple from the Greek era in Egypt, built during the Ptolemaic period, and dedicated to the god Serapis, who was believed to protect Alexandria.

Next, you'll explore the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, one of the largest Roman catacombs. Originally carved for Pharaonic purposes, these catacombs were later adapted by the Romans. They were in use until the late 4th century AD and are about 6 meters in diameter and 10 meters deep, with a staircase leading down to three levels of catacombs.

For lunch, you'll head to the main Corniche street overlooking the Mediterranean, where you can enjoy a delicious seafood meal (not included) at one of Alexandria’s top restaurants, with views of the old harbour and a refreshing lemon mint juice. Afterward, you'll check into your hotel for the night.

If you're interested in exploring further in the evening, your private tour guide can meet you to take a walk and sample some of Alexandria's famous desserts.

Enjoy lunch at the hotel before meeting your tour guide and personal driver for another exciting day trip in Alexandria. Today’s experience will be quite different from yesterday's as you'll visit the Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the ruins of the ancient Lighthouse of Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Unfortunately, the lighthouse was destroyed by a severe earthquake in the 6th century, causing much of ancient Alexandria's monuments to be lost or submerged. While the exact appearance of the lighthouse remains unknown, the Mamluk Sultan Qaitbay used its solid foundations to build a coastal fortress against the Ottoman Empire.

On your way back to Cairo, you'll stop by the modern Library of Alexandria, which opened to the public in 1996 with the help of UNESCO. Although it cannot rival the original Library founded in the early 3rd century BCE by Ptolemy I and expanded by his successor Ptolemy II, it remains a significant cultural landmark.

You'll be transferred back to Cairo, with an optional stop for a hot drink at one of the rest stops during the 2-hour drive to the capital. We hope you enjoyed your overnight trip to Alexandria from Cairo.
