Il politeismo fa parte della cultura dell'antico Egitto e gli egittologi possono constatare che non si tratta di una pluralità nel senso che ci aspettiamo, ma solo di diverse manifestazioni di un unico idolo, oppure è il risultato della multiculturalità che esisteva in Egitto. 

Il numero di divinità nell'antica civiltà egizia raggiungeva circa 1.500 divinità, naturalmente non tutte contate, che rappresentavano nella loro totalità fenomeni naturali e sociali e concetti astratti. 

Molti testi egizi riportano i nomi degli dèi senza menzionarne il carattere o il ruolo, mentre altri si riferiscono a specifiche divinità senza nemmeno menzionarne il nome, per cui è difficile compilare un elenco completo. 

Amun
