Taba

The island is composed of solid granite, 350 meters long from north to south and 170 meters at its widest point. The island covers an area of 3.9 hectares (9.6 acres) and is separated from its western shore by a shallow lagoon, about 250 meters wide, accessible only by boat at high tide, which served as a sheltered anchorage in the 13th century. In addition, the island has a 35 x 65-meter harbor whose heavily silted basin provides further protection. The island and its harbor are located at the crossroads of maritime and land routes, the former connecting to the south of the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa, and the latter heading north to Syria and across the Sinai to Egypt.
