Tomb of Khnumhotep |
His tomb (No. 14) in Bani Hassan consists of one chapel for offerings carved into the rock with two pillars. The columns are now gone. The church walls were painted although today the paintings are very faded. Inside the church, there are two columns leading to the burial chambers, and only one of them has been completed.
The western wall of the Offering Chapel, south of the entrance, shows a long autobiographical inscription, an important historical document. Under the inscription, Khnumhotep I appears on a boat fishing in the marshes. To the north of the entrance on the same wall is a false door in which the family of Khnumhotep I is depicted.
Especially the scene with the family members is too faint and not all the names are preserved. The north wall shows Khnumhotep I and his wife Zatibi standing before an offering table.
In front of them in five registers are workers on different tasks. Shown in the upper register is a desert hunt.
On the same wall, Khamphotep I appears again watching men work in the marshes. The eastern wall is entirely dedicated to battle scenes. There appears a siege of a castle or town. There are fighting soldiers and gladiators.
The south wall is not well preserved and once shows Khnunotpe sitting and watching the people and work as well as the musicians playing music for him. Once again he stands and watches the peasants work in the marshes
