Monastery of Baramus in Wadi El Natrun
Among Wadi al-Natrun Monasteries, exists one of the most known regions in Egypt is related to the Christian monasteries, The Monastery of ‘’Al-Baramus’’. It is also sometimes called the Monastery of the Romans and it is likely to be the first monastery built in Wadi al-Natrun. In fact, it is thought that the place is where Macarius the Great used to live around 330-340 AD. when he dedicated his life to monastic life. The monastery has a modern Arabic name ‘’al Baramus’’ which’s an Arabic word coming from the Coptic Pa-Ramos, meaning "that of the Romans". The origins of the name, which many haven’t agreed upon have been in dispute.
This monastery today is considered to be an extremely important sight in that it was built on a site in the front south of the Old Paramus monastery, discovered by some archaeologists in 1994. Some assume that it was wrongly recognized as "the Monastery of Moses the Black". Whereas others believe that it’s Deir Anba Musa al-Aswad, or the ‘’Monastery of Saint Moses the Black’’, under the leadership of St.Isidore the Hegumen, which was the original name.
The old monastery almost dates to 340 AD. Noting that there exists some confusion related to the current monastery's history in relationship to the old monastery. It is possible that both existed deliberately at some site, with the old monastery known as Deir al-Baramus, and the current monastery known as the Monastery of the Virgin of Baramus.
