info about Howard Carter's House | The Discoverer of Tutankhamun's Tomb

  • 05 16, 2023

The Carter House is one of the ancient Egyptian houses located in the Governorate of Luxor. The house is attributed to the Egyptologist Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun. It was used as a resting place during his stay in Luxor. It was founded in 1910 AD, 12 years before the discovery of the tomb.

It is located at the entrance to the Valley of the Kings in Qurna, about 20 km from Luxor. It is situated on a high hill.

The building is covered with a wooden roof and consists of five rooms, a corridor and a laboratory. Inside the building there are photos of Lord Carnarvon, who financed the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, and a group of photos of Howard Carter, photos of the excavation workers and people during the excavation of the tomb. It will be fitted out according to the architecture of the pioneer of Islamic architecture, Hassan Fathi, to allow natural ventilation inside the museum.

Carter bequeathed his house to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in gratitude for the museum's support for the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb. Ownership of the house was then transferred to the Egyptian Antiquities Authority, which extended it to the west and used the building as a residence for inspectors and archaeologists.

The Carter House became a museum in 2009. The Factum Art Foundation also created an exact copy of Tutankhamun's tomb in the grounds of the house and donated it to the Ministry of Antiquities in 2014. The Carter House and gardens underwent restoration work in 2022 to commemorate the centenary of the Amazing Carter discovery.
