The MSC Splendida is an impressive cruise ship that has made a significant impact on the cruise industry. Completed in 2009 for $550 million, the ship is a sister ship to the MSC Fantasia and was originally intended to be named the MSC Serenata. The ship's impressive dimensions include a gross tonnage of 137,936 GT, a length of 333.30 metres, a beam of 37.98 metres, and a height of 66.81 metres, with a draft of 8.29 meters. Its capacity is an astounding 3,900 passengers, making it one of the largest ships in the European cruise line's fleet at delivery time.
The ship's construction began in 2007, and she was launched from the shipyard in 2008. After successful sea trials, the ship was delivered to MSC Cruises in 2009 and embarked on her maiden voyage on the same day, returning a week later to be officially named in Barcelona by her godmother, Sophia Loren.
The MSC Splendida has sailed the Mediterranean and the Far East throughout the years. In 2017, the ship underwent renovations before being sent to China. The boat docked in Phuket, Thailand, in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and more than 2,700 passengers disembarked. Through the summer of 2020, the vessel will operate in Southeast Asia before moving to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. The MSC Splendida is slated to be based in Durban, South Africa, for the 2023–2024 cruise season. It will cater to the local market and sail to locations like Mozambique, Mauritius, Reunion, Namibia, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town.
One of the notable features of the MSC Splendida is its horn system, which is programmed to play multiple songs, including some by Queen and The White Stripes, adding to the ship's unique character and entertainment offerings.
The MSC Splendida regularly includes the port of Safaga, Egypt, as part of its voyage itinerary. Safaga has become a popular destination for the cruise ship and its passengers, offering a gateway to explore the rich history and natural wonders of the region. Passengers can embark on Egypt shore excursions to the nearby city of Luxor, home to ancient Egyptian landmarks, and also explore the vibrant local markets and stunning beaches of Safaga.
