It was called after the saffron plantations because of all the saffron gardens that surrounded it. It raised up on the Haswa Palace wreck which was built by Muhammad Ali. All the drawing and paintings made by the Egyptian architect Maghrabi Bey Saad during the reign of Khedive Ismail in 1870. Khedive Ismail wanted to have an exact model of Versailles Palace in France in where Khedive had her education period.
Khedive Ismail gave the palace to his mother Khoshyar Hanim as a present In 1872, her mother was so ill as her doctor consulted her to stay in the fresh air, so this palace was convenient for her condition as the green grounds surrounding the palace and natural landscapes.
