The construction of the “Al-Nour” mosque in Abbasiya dates back to the seventies during the era of the late President Anwar Sadat, when the mosque’s land was granted to the “Islamic Guidance” Association headed by Sheikh Hafez Salama, the leader of the popular resistance in Suez, provided that the mosque is under the supervision of the Ministry of Endowments.
Seven times, clashes were repeated between the supporters of Sheikh Hafez Salama, head of the Salafist “Islamic Guidance” Association, and the supporters of Sheikh Ahmed Turk, the imam of the Al-Nour Mosque, after Sheikh Muhammad Hassan’s sermon, on the first Friday after the revolution, ignited the Salafist association’s enthusiasm for the mosque’s right to it without Affiliation of the Ministry of Awqaf, according to the judicial ruling issued to them.
Disputes continued in the mosque, between altercations and clashes between the supporters of “Salama” and “Turk”, and between the struggle over who should ascend the Friday sermon pulpit, which sometimes ends with the rise of Hafiz, Turk or a third person at the end!
The Al-Nour Mosque was one of the most important sites that witnessed a heavy security intensification on January 25, in anticipation of the outbreak of the "Day of Rage". Among the funny protests in the mosque was a demonstration by a group of Salafis, in protest against what was reported that former President Hosni Mubarak had asked to be buried in the mosque.
