Sultan al-Muayyad Mosque

Sultan al-Muayyad Mosque

The story of building the mosque:

The story of building the mosque goes back to the fact that “Al-Moayyed” was imprisoned in a treasury in the north of Egypt, and it happened that “Al-Moayyed” suffered during a night of bugs and fleas, so he vowed to God Almighty that the King of Egypt would enable him to make this spot a mosque for God Almighty, and a school For the people of knowledge, he fulfilled his vow.

Some accounts say that the reason for Al-Moayad's imprisonment was the arrival of a slander to Sultan Barquq that Al-Moayad wanted to stage a coup against the government, so he ordered him to be imprisoned in this place.

The artistic value of this mosque:

This mosque is considered one of the largest and most massive mosques in Cairo, rather it is a wonderful architectural masterpiece, starting from the door of the mosque...

It is basically the door of Sultan Hassan's school, but Al-Moayyed bought it with a copper oven to include it in the mosque, and after entering from The huge gate of the mosque sees the tomb of "Al-Mu'ayyad", and next to it is the tomb of his son Ibrahim, who died as a young boy. Upon entering the main door of the mosque, on the left, we find a water fountain that was used in the past to quench the thirst of the mosque's visitors and passers-by.

The mosque of Sultan Al-Muayyad consists of a courtyard in the middle that is open and surrounded by four corridors, the largest and deepest of which is the hallway of the direction of prayer qiblah, and its walls are covered with colored marble to the level of the mihrab.

The two minarets were built over the two towers of Bab Zuweila, and each of them is in three levels, engraved and decorated. The mosque has four facades, and the eastern one is the main one.

There is the main entrance at its northern end, and it has a double staircase and a high-rise door covered with marble.

As for the dome of the mosque, we can reach it through a door to the left of the entrance hall. It is built of stone and its floor is made of colored marble.
