The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Hotel, known as the Old Cataract Hotel, was built by Thomas Cook to accommodate European travellers. It is situated on the banks of the Nile, overlooking Elephantine Island and the mausoleum of the iconic British period Aga Khan. The Grand Hotel opened its doors in January 1900. A new tower wing was built in 1961.

Between 2008 and 2011, the hotel was closed for a complete restoration during which the tower was shared with the historic Old Cataract wing in a single hotel.

The Old Cataract Wing, which had 131 rooms and eight suites, was renamed the Palace Wing and now has 76 rooms and 45 suites, while the New Cataract Wing, which had 44 rooms, turned to the Nile Wing and added 62 rooms and 37 suites. For over 100 years, the hotel has played host to many celebrities and stars.
